FSA/FLEX Alumni
2000-2001 FSA/FLEX Alumni
I was the Freedom Support Act Secondary School Recruiter for the 2000-2001 FSA/FLEX Alumni while I worked for the American Councils for International Education and Youth for Understanding, the organizations who are responsible for the recruitment, selection, orientation, and travel arrangements of the competition. The recruitment and final selection of participants is very competitive. Three thousand and thirty-eight students in Kyrgyzstan participated in the the First Round of competition (composed of a simple 10 question English exam). Of these students, 614 were selected to participate in the Second Round of competition (composed of Essays and SLEP examinations). A panel in Moscow, Russia, then selected 246 students to participate in the Third Round interviews where I interviewed them and gave them applications. Of these 246 students, approximately 40 of these students were selected by a panel in Washington, DC, to be high school exchange students in the US for one year.

These students began their exchange in June of each year. Most of them left roughly a year later. Several have returned to the US to continue their education in various colleges across the US. Many stayed in Kyrgyzstan where the majority study at the American University in Central Asia.
The pictures of the Alumni will be listed by the year they participated in the FSA/FLEX program.
